Crafternoon!

Our Crafternoon was a grand success! The children had a great time being creative and getting glittery. Thank you to the wonderful volunteers, and thank you to Nicole Hupin-Otis for the well-thought-out plans!

highest mountains in North America.

Today we made a graph that shows the highest
mountains in North America. We used a scale of 1 inch = 350 ft. First, we looked on a chart that showed the highest mountains in North America and how tall they were. Then, we divided the actual height by 350 and that answer is how many inches we would make our strip. After that, we measured the sentence strip and figured out how long they had to be. Some people had to use more than one sentence strip to show how tall the mountains are! The strips were labeled with the name of the mountain, where it's located, and how tall it actually is. Once all the strips were done, we put them in order. In the end, we taped them to the wall. This was a fun activity because we got to measure and try to figure things out.

What Writing Looks Like

Descriptive writing has been our focus for several weeks. You would not believe the fun we have! We began by reviewing paragraph structure and then we worked on planning for a descriptive essay. Lately we've been revising our writing by adding sensory details and interesting sentence structure. The next few lessons will continue to focus on the revision process and editing for spelling and then we will "publish" one of our essays. (Publishing = type it and share it.) What a group of writers we have in Room 3.

Poetry Submissions

Last week, Mr. Daignault reminded me of a due date for the Anthology of Poetry submissions. Each year, the fourth grade teachers try to submit poems from our students to be published in the Anthology. I had forgotten about the deadline, but proposed it to the students on Tuesday. Submitting a poem was optional. In the span of 45 minutes, we had 14 students ready their poems to be sent! If students are selected for the book, they will receive a letter in the mail in the spring. Keep your fingers crossed!

Landforms - Out of Moon Sand!

In social studies, we've been learning about different landforms. We watched a landform movie and did some research to make landform posters. In order to review what the different landforms look like, today we made Moon Sand Landforms. (Can you say that three times quickly?) Each group picked a moon sand color and built landforms out of it. They labeled with little flags, and it was a great (and fun) way to review!

We've Been Out of Touch!

Our blog has been woefully neglected. It's time to catch up a bit! We are learning and creating every day. Sometimes it's hard to slow down and share what we do. But I'll try to keep everyone updated a bit better, and hopefully I'll get a little help from the members of Room 3. Here are a few recent highlights.


School Store Grand Opening - On November 4th, we held our first school store. It was a blast! Beforehand, a group of students shopped for items that we then ordered to sell in our store. They chose wonderful merchandise: erasers and sharpeners and pencils and grips. We advertised with signs and a commercial (which was performed the day before our grand opening over the loudspeaker at dismissal). Lots of kids came to the school store! Each student had a job and everyone contributed to make the school store a huge success. We've since held a second school store, which was not as busy, and have learned that we should advertise each time, so kids remember to bring their money. We love being responsible for the school store! Thank you to the wonderful parent volunteers.
Saying Goodbye to Maddie - Maddie moved to another school. We were all so sad to see her go! It just so happened that her last day was on Teddy's birthday, so Ted's mom generously threw a party, complete with snacks, to celebrate Teddy and Maddie. We had lots of fun, and think that we sent Maddie off with a bang. It was a bittersweet celebration, and the class made a spontaneous "graffiti board" in honor of our wonderful friend, Maddie.

A Brand New Year

We've had great days so far in fourth grade! We have had fun free time in our classroom. Writing is so much fun. We have used our math, writing and science notebooks. On Fridays, we plan to share special talents. I can't believe we're getting homework today, but we should get used to it.

Room 3 is fabulous. The classroom has it's own library. Perhaps you didn't know that we have a back door that opens right to the playground. Our room has a large screen and a projector. Thank goodness we have two fabulous fans keeping us cool. We have two spectacular teachers. It's so different to be downstairs. We love our classroom.

This year, there has been a change to our lunch routine. We go out to recess first, then come in to eat our lunches. It was different to have recess before lunch. Last year, it seemed like people didn't take the time to eat their lunches because they wanted to get outside quickly. Plus, we are more hungry after we run around and eat more of our lunch. We think recess before lunch is working out really well and we love it!
